It gathers what is interesting about economic history to draw important lessons."--Ed Tower, Professor of Economics, Duke University "William Bernstein scrutinizes the research literature, distills it with originality and insight, then shares the results with classic Bernstein clarity and wit. Ideologues on both political wings should prepare to have their assumptions challenged." --Bernard Sherman, Host, Talk of Iowa - Focus on Finance radio show A daring look at the development of human prosperity--how it was created, and where it's headed In the breakthrough spirit of Against the Gods, William Bernstein's The Birth of Plenty has the topical uniqueness and storytelling panache to literally create its own category and reader. Based upon the premise that mankind experienced virtually zero economic growth from the dawn of time until 1820, this provocative, bigpicture book identifies the four conditions necessary for sustained economic progress--property rights, scientific rationalism, capital markets, and communications and transportation technology-- and then analyzes their gradual appearance and impact throughout every corner of the globe. Filled with bestselling author William Bernstein's trademark meticulous research and page-turning writing style, The Birth of Plenty explores: Where the world economy could be headed next Implications of the book's thesis for today's society How the absence of one or more of the conditions continues to threaten beleaguered regions Rare is the book that proposes an entirely new premise, validates that premise with inarguable research and analysis, and then explains beyond question both the relevance and the implications of its premise to the reader and the world at large. The Birth of Plenty isjust such a book. From its unique, topical subject matter to its tremendous review potential, this insightful book will be one of the most talked-about volumes of the publishing season.4023 Руб.
A History of Everyday Things is a pioneering essay by one of the world's leading cultural historians that sheds light on the origins of the consumer society, and thereby the birth of the modern world. Things that we regard as the everyday objects of consumption have not always been so: how, therefore, have people in the modern world become "prisoners of objects," as Rousseau put it? Daniel Roche answers this fundamental question of historical anthropology, and imaginatively explores the origins of the daily furnishings of modern life.3224 Руб.
This book is a modest piece of work that searched for the “Truth” in three major monotheistic religions of the world. This book gives minute details from the era before Moses and the birth of Judaism; how Christianity was born and how the Holy Bible was distorted and the birth of Islam: “The True Path.” Apart from highlighting how the Jews violated their promises with God! This well-researched book reveals the crimes committed by the Jews in this world, past and the present and the International Jews (Zionism) greatest conspiracy: The September 11 attack! Evidence in this book would also shows the Christians that Jesus was a special Prophet of God and not His son as they claimed. Ultimately, Jesus would return to this earth and restore the true path “Islam”, and Human being would understand that there is only ONE GOD, Who created all for mankind in abundance of everything for everybody and there is no need for any war! This book is full of evidences and answers to the main issues on which the three main religions differ and is a must for everyone who seeks the Truth. What is the position of translated literature in the literary system of target language? Is there a possibility that translated literature can go from the periphery to the center? According to Even-Zohar (Zohar, 1978), translated literature may go from the periphery to the center under three conditions : when a polysystem has not yet been crystallized, that is to say, when a literature is “young” or in the process of being established; when a literature is either “peripheral” (within a large group of correlated literatures) or “weak” or both; when there are turning points, crises, or literary vacuums in a literature. Among these conditions, the third one conforms to the historical facts of China during the May 4th span when there was a Literary Revolution to oppose the old literature and set up new modern literature. And then can the historical facts be used to verify the third hypothesis? If it is true, then how much influence of translated literature can be exerted on the language, literature, culture, and even society of target language? The author of this book attempts to answer these questions in her research.4763 Руб.
To an extraordinary extent we continue to live in the shadow of the classical world. At every level from languages to calendars to political systems, we are the descendants of a ?classical Europe?, using frames of reference created by ancient Mediterranean cultures. As this consistently fresh and surprising new book makes clear, however, this was no less true for the inhabitants of those classical civilizations themselves, whose myths, history, and buildings were an elaborate engagement with an already old and revered past filled with great leaders and writers, emigrations and battles. Indeed, much of the reason we know so much about the classical past is the obsessive importance it held for so many generations of Greeks and Romans, who interpreted and reinterpreted their changing casts of heroes and villains. Figures such as Alexander the Great and Augustus Caesar loom large in our imaginations today, but they were themselves fascinated by what had preceded them. The Birth of Classical Europe is therefore both an authoritative history, and also a fascinating attempt to show how our own changing values and interests have shaped our feelings about an era which is by some measures very remote but by others startlingly close.1619 Руб.
The Pangs of Birth in African Christianity: Essays in Commemoration of One Hundred Years of Mutira Anglican Mission (1912-2012), traces the growth of protestant Christianity since 1844 when Ludwig Krapf, a German missionary working for the English body, Church Missionary Society, reached the East African Coast with the sole aim of converting local people to Christianity. The book seeks to demonstrate how a miniature village in Kenya, Mutira, came to appear in the map of the world after Christianity was introduced by the European missionaries in early 1900s; and subsequently changed peoples'' lifestyles. It moves on to demonstrate that Christianity in Mutira and the rest of Africa was born under pain - a pain that was bravely borne by its pioneers. In its second part, the book provides critical essays that are set to demonstrate that African Christianity has the capacity to grapple effectively with the challenges of the 21st century. Such concerns include suffering, neo-colonialism, poverty, disease, violence, xenophobia, identity crisis, negative ethnicity, inculturation, ecumenism, reconstruction and reconciliation among others.7678 Руб.

The First World War created the modern world. It destroyed a century of relative peace and prosperity and saw a continent at the height of its success descend into slaughter. It unleashed both the demons of the twentieth century - political hatred, military destruction and mass death - and the ideas which continue to shape our world today: mdoernism in the arts, new approaches to psychology and medecine, and radical ideas about economics and society. John Keegan's definitive account unforgettably portrays the unfolding military conflict on land, sea and in the air. But at its heart, too, is the terrible cost of this conflict's ferocity - the loss which remains personal and individual despite its unparalleled scale.1459 Руб.

This book presents empirical evidence of how modern Christians' perceptions (including beliefs and attitudes) and knowledge (and understanding) could affect their level and practice of tithing. Despite the fact that tithing transcends generations, era, epoch and seasons, today thousands of Christians believe it was an Old Testament doctrine that is outdated and has no place in the modern Church. The Book gives an evidence based assessment of how what one perceives and knows regarding this great Biblical Principle could affect one's attitude towards and the actual practice of tithing. Concurrent Mixed Method Research Design was used in the study to ensure triangulation of findings and to provide a platform for undertaking an in-depth study of the concept of tithing among modern Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians. Despite negative perceptions created in the World today largely by the media and some church leaders regarding the principle of tithing, the study established that systematic and sound teaching is still far more important in reinforcing the truth and ensuring that Christians are firmly grounded on Biblical Truth. The findings have been largely supported by scriptures.6794 Руб.
A Question of Balance – How France and the United States Created Cold War Europe4987 Руб.
The Second World War was a continuation of the First World War.Some historians trace the basic cause of this war to the peace Treaty of Versailles that was signed at the end of the First World War between Germany and the Allies because this treaty was harsh and Germany lost much as a result.Hence Germany fought in the period between1939-1945 to smash the Versailles Peace Settlement and to reverse the defeat of 1918.In 1930s, Italy joined Germany as a revisionist power. On the other hand, there was an alliance between the USSR and the western capitalist states in which they established an international front against fascism. There was of course a great deal of mutual suspicion between them and the alliance was often insecure. The chief controversy was the question of the opening of the Second Front(an Anglo-American invasion of Germany from the west). The USSR and soviet historians argued that the western powers deliberately delayed the Second Front so that the USSR would have to do most of the fighting and would be weaker after the war.But the western historians argued that the invasion of Western Europe was difficult and could not be launched before 1944 with a real hope of success.6308 Руб.
