Computational linguistics (CL) is a discipline between linguistics & computer science, concerned with the computational aspects of the human language faculty. It belongs to the cognitive sciences, linguistics & overlaps with the field of artificial intelligence, a branch of computer science aiming at computational models of human cognition. Natural language processing also overlapping these fields, concerned with the interactions between computers & human languages providing the possibility of natural language interfaces to knowledge bases and natural language translation. CL develop formal models simulating aspects of the human language faculty & implement them as computer programs, which constitute the basis for the evaluation & further development of the theories. In addition to linguistic theories, findings from cognitive psychology play a major role in simulating linguistic competence. Within psychology, it is mainly the area of psycholinguistics that examines the cognitive processes constituting human language use. The relevance of computational modelling for psycholinguistic research is reflected in the emergence of a new sub discipline: computational psycholinguistics.8007 Руб.
Concepts in Communication Studies and Literature in English is a well researched text book targeted at guiding advanced learners in the domains of communication, literature, style, and stylistics. The inadequacy of course materials that dogs the efforts of in-service trainees and advanced learners especially in the polytechnic system is the strong motivational factor for the present scholarship. The topics that are treated in this book are designed to equip learners with the needed communication skills and the knowledge that can enhance productivity in organisations. Furthermore, curriculum designers have discovered that literature is language in action and an important component of language and communication studies hence, its inclusion in Use of English syllabus for students in tertiary institutions. Topics in Literature in English that are treated in this book are structured to groom learners and develop their critical thinking ability.6404 Руб.
Many people find it difficult to translate; some think that translation is a talent and that a translator is born not made. Modern studies in the field of linguistics, psychology and translation studies, however, have shown that translation is a mental activity that requires knowledge and practice. As a mental process, translation can be divided into certain skills. Through training on these skills, a novice translator can find his way and plant his feet firmly on the land of translation. This course is meant as a first training guide to novice translators and students who need translation in their academic work. Throughout the units and lessons of the course, the translators'' abilities will be enhanced and good translation products will be attained.4621 Руб.
Critical discourse studies is a multifarious field constantly developing different methodological frameworks for dynamically analysing evolving aspects of language in a broad range of socio-political and institutional contexts. This volume is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary account of these theoretical and empirical developments. It presents an up-to-date survey of critical discourse studies (CDS), covering both the theoretical landscape and the analytical territories that it extends over. It is intended for critical scholars and students who wish to keep abreast of the current state of the art. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the chapters are organised around different methodological perspectives for CDS (history, cognition, multimodality and corpora, among others). In the second part, the chapters are organised around particular discourse types and topics investigated in CDS, both traditionally (e.g. issues of racism and gender inequality) and only more recently (e.g. issues of health, public policy, and the environment). This is, altogether, an essential new reference work for all CDS practitioners.3167 Руб.

The formal beginning of English literature as a discipline is a contested site, if not shrouded by mystery altogether. Ben Jonson, Dr Johnson, Matthew Arnold—all these and many more can claim to be the beginner of a tradition which has travelled deep and wide in time and space for more than ten centuries now. But though the beginnings cannot be ascertained with accuracy, it is clear that the discipline has started falling apart. The essays collected in this book is a modest attempt at understanding the dynamics of this tradition from the literary to the cultural, from “English” to “englishes,” from literary criticism to critical theory, from literary studies to cultural studies6404 Руб.
This dissertation entitled as “Rise and Spread of English in British India" examined the history of rise and spread of English in British India from an Indian perspective. The re-reading will provide the current scenario of English as a subject of study in the independent India. Lots of changes it had witnessed from the day it had been dragged into India due to the acceptance of Macaulayan Minute on Education (1835). Macaulay had favoured English to be introduced in India just because the British needed the clerks for administration and mediators to carry out their orders in British India. Taking Macaulay’s Minutes on Education (1835) as a primary resource, this dissertation critically compares it with gradually emerged trends in the field of English studies in post-independent India. The re-reading from Macaulay to Viswanathan and Alan Durant will produce a link through which we can easily connect the changes occurred in the field of English in India from its very limited area ‘English Literature’ to the fresh and emerging area ‘English studies’ without any fix boundaries and limitations.4706 Руб.
In this volume, Ben Medlock investigates the application of machine learning classification techniques to four key natural language processing tasks: topic classification, spam filtering, anonymisation and hedge identification. Theoretical arguments are combined with practical experiments, and consideration is given to the impact of the presented research within the wider context of the field as a whole.Natural language processing (NLP) is a thriving discipline in both the research and commercial arenas. It is central to the next generation of computational systems and a key technology in advancing the ease with which humans and machines interact. The classification paradigm, drawn from the field of machine learning, is a generic framework within which a computational learner induces a functional mapping between a particular sample space and a set of designated target classes, or in simple terms, the automatic assignment of category labels to data. This is a wide-ranging exploration of applied classification techniques for NLP and an essential read for those with an interest in the application of computers to language processing.5565 Руб.
Due to importance of productive skills and shift of focus in English education, there is a need for investigating learners’ classroom behavior to find out the ways that lead to better students and better teaching. In particular, significance of risk-taking in oral production has been documented in many studies. The present study addresses EFL students and tries to explain and analyze their attitudes toward risk-taking and silence in classroom.4706 Руб.

Several studies of errors in English writing of learners of English as a second language, in India and abroad are available. In India quite a few studies have been made of Indian English in general, and of the English of several regional Indian language speakers but not much work had been done on the English of Telugu speakers. The work examines the language features such as structure, lexis, style, and spelling and punctuation of bilingual postgraduate students whose first language is Telugu. The student errors have been analysed in terms of the sources such as language learning strategies, communication strategies, mother tongue interference and socio-cultural factors. In addition, this study also analyses the errors with reference to the influence of three specific socio- psychological variables like medium of instruction, urban or rural area, and exposure to English. This book should be of interest to all those interested in bilingual education, language variation, remedial teaching, effective syllabus design, preparation of new teaching materials and formulation of better evaluation strategies.7451 Руб.
