Revision with unchanged content. The argument of reparations on behalf of African-Americans based on slavery continues well into the 21st Century here in America. Can a gross miscarriage of injustice in 1906 sway the arguments for compensatory damages become valid based on racism? The case of the all-black 25th Infantry of the United States Army in the Brownsville Affair is perhaps one of the most egregious events in American history. On the night of August 13, 1906, a group of anonymous men went on a shooting rampage throughout the town of Brownsville, Texas, leaving one person dead and another wounded. There had been hostilities between black soldiers and white civilians prior to the shootings; therefore, it did not take long for local authorities to assume the collective guilt of black soldiers. Without an adequate investigation or a full hearing, President Roosevelt bowed to public pressure and issued dishonorable discharges to all members of the 25th who were stationed in Brownsville. Following their immediate discharge from the United States Army in December 1906, many of these soldiers were refused civilian employment due to their military status. This book is a reexamination of the Brownsville affair and its aftermath and seeks to make a case for restitution on behalf of the discharged soldiers and their families.3961 Руб.
Translated by Constance Garnett With an introduction by A. D. P. Briggs. The House of the Dead is a stark account of Dostoyevsky's own experience of penal servitude in Siberia. In graphic detail he describes the suffering of the convicts their squalor and degradation, their terror and resignation, from the rampages of a psychopath to the brief serenity of Christmas Day. Amid the horror of labour in the sub-zero work camp, we hear the stories of the prisoners, and live through the freezing isolation and pain of day after day of misery. We see a young intellectual forced to live, eat and sleep with men from a background of cruelty, coarseness and brutality. A comic romance set in a grand old house in the Tasmanian midlands. Philadelphia is a beautiful, thoroughly modern girl about town with a determination to choose her own destiny but the matchmakers are swarming. Her 80 year old Grandmother, Clarinda, is busy conspiring with Kaleen an upwardly mobile fashion designer from Melbourne, the two of them want to bring together money and breeding in the form of Algernon, Kaleen’s dysfunctional mathematical genius of a son. In the meantime Philadelphia’s Grandfather, Edgar, is also matchmaking and wants to team her up with the son of his World War II squadron leader and a member of the British aristocracy Sir Reginald Houghton-Smythe a globetrotting millionaire with a plum in his mouth and cholesterol clogging his veins. There is a spanner in the works however in the form a punk rocker from London by name of Johnnie Compost self-proclaimed leader of The Great Unwashed. Mayhem and pandemonium ensue and is all seen through the satirical eyes of Lavenham a legal type from Hobart whose idea of a good night out is a good night in.1406 Руб.

In her 1916 ghost story, Kerfol, Edith Wharton tells of Anne de Barrigan, a young woman convicted of murdering her jealous husband. The elderly lord was found on the stairs, apparently savaged by a pack of dogs, though there were no dogs – no live dogs – at Kerfol that day. In these remarkable intertwining stories, Deborah Noyes returns to the manor to tell de Barrigan's story through the sympathetic eyes of her servant girl. Four more tales slip forward in time, following characters haunted by the ghosts of Kerfol – the dead dogs; the sensual, uneasy relationships; and the bitter taste of revenge.822 Руб.
It is a well-known stereotype that Muslims generally have a negative view of dogs. Dogs are held in low esteem in the Muslim countries and Islamic arguments are occasionally used to justify the neglect and abuse of them. Today Muslims are challenged by the modern animal rights discourse and frequently criticized for the treatment of dogs. Interestingly, however, throughout much of the history, the general situation of dogs, as well as animals in general, was much better in Muslim countries in comparison to Western world. This book searches for the historic circumstances and precedents that led to this negative view about dogs and presents a historic survey of basic texts concerning dogs in Islamic sources. Islamic heritage possesses many resources to extend moral consideration to animals, including dogs, and it is an unjustifiable partisan position to single out the negative view as uniquely authoritative and normative. The book challenges the well-accepted notion of the impurity and baseness of dogs and shows that there are ample sources and interpretations in classical Islamic sources which may justify different opinions.7451 Руб.
SHORTLISTED FOR THE WOLFSON HISTORY PRIZE, THE PUSHKIN HOUSE RUSSIAN BOOK PRIZE AND THE LONGMAN HISTORY TODAY PRIZE 2017 THE TIMES, BBC HISTORY and TLS BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2016 'Masterful, gripping ...filled with astonishing, vivid and heartbreaking stories of crime and punishment, of redemption, love and terrifying violence. It has an amazing cast of despots, murderers, whores and heroes. It's a wonderful read' Simon Sebag Montefiore It was known as 'the vast prison without a roof'. From the beginning of the nineteenth century to the Russian Revolution, the tsarist regime exiled more than one million prisoners and their families beyond the Ural Mountains to Siberia. The House of the Dead, brings to life both the brutal realities of an inhuman system and the tragic and inspiring fates of those who endured it. This is the vividly told history of common criminals and political radicals, the victims of serfdom and village politics, the wives and children who followed husbands and fathers, and of fugitives and bounty-hunters. The tsars looked on Siberia as creating the ultimate political quarantine from the contagions of revolution. Generations of rebels - republicans, nationalists and socialists - were condemned to oblivion thousands of kilometres from European Russia. Over the nineteenth century, however, these political exiles transformed Siberia's mines, prisons and remote settlements into an enormous laboratory of revolution. This masterly work of original research taps a mass of almost unknown primary evidence held in Russian and Siberian archives to tell the epic story both of Russia's struggle to govern its monstrous penal colony and Siberia's ultimate, decisive impact on the political forces of the modern world. 'An absolutely fascinating book, rich in fact and anecdote.' - David Aaronovitch 'A splendid example of academic scholarship for a public audience. Yet even though he is an impressively calm and sober narrator, the injustices and atrocities pile up on every page.' - Dominic Sandbrook 'A superb, colourful history of Siberian exile under the tsars' - The Times1504 Руб.

But Lady Ty's daughter was there, and Peter owes Lady Ty a favour.
